The Honor Role: A Blog for Parenting with Purpose
After a long day at school, many children experience what’s known as "after-school restraint collapse." This common phenomenon occurs when kids hold it together all day, only to release their emotions once they’re home. For parents, especially those navigating the early weeks of a new school year, this sudden shift can be both surprising and challenging. As you adjust to the back-to-school routine, it’s important to recognize that your child is also adapting to new schedules, social dynamics, and academic demands. Understanding how to manage after-school restraint collapse is crucial in helping your child—and yourself—transition smoothly during this time.
As parents, our primary goal is to raise considerate, confident, and resourceful future adults. While it may be tempting to believe that academic excellence alone paves the way to success, that’s just one facet of their development. Equipping our children with essential life skills is equally vital. Raising well-rounded, self-sufficient individuals is more valuable than prioritizing financial success.
Did you know that 85 percent of career success comes from highly developed soft skills? According to research from Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford University, only 15 percent of career success is attributed to hard skills or technical skills learned through education. With this in mind, teaching our students soft skills is critical in setting them up for success as future professionals. Although academic excellence is crucial, incorporating soft skill development through extracurricular activities and practice at home can significantly benefit your student.
Although it happens every year, back-to-school season somehow manages to sneak up on us. If we don’t start easing our way back into the rhythms of the school year before the first day of school, it can lead to chaotic mornings, rushing and trying to play catch up.
